What affect do elements have on the properties of steel? In this module we will highlight the key factors There are hundreds of steels ranging in properties, in this module we will look at what constitutes a steel, what properties can be effected, what chemical elements we add to steel and how these effect the properties. You will be introduced to a fundamental diagram is used in metallurgy, the iron carbon diagram. You will be taken through the principles of this diagram, what happens on cooling and how structures are created. We will also look at two further diagrams used in metallurgy that take into account chemistry, section size and heat treatment parameter and how this relates to structure (the Continuous Cooling Transformation and Time Temperature Transformation diagrams). We will also expand on module 1 (Introduction to Materials) looking at how the structure can be strengthened and look at various strengthen mechanisms.
