A narcissist by definition feels entitled, lacks empathy, and exploits others. You might have to work with a narcissist or deal with someone with high narcissistic traits on a daily basis. If you co-parent with a narcissist, you might find yourself highly triggered by their attempts to gaslight you and drag you into negative conversations. Over the years, I have learned to rely on my number one tool, which has helped me repel narcissists, word salads, and even narcissistic abuse. It was really hard to detach from the narcissistic ex, who thrived on trying to engage me with emotional manipulation. He would call me names, accuse me of things I was not guilty of, and persecuted me in front of my children whenever he had a chance. For years, I reacted like a horse following a dangling carrot. But then one day, I SHUTTY SHUTTY! The first time I consciously DID NOT text him back after texting me a bunch of abusive texts, was the first time I began to understand the power of SHUTTY SHUTTY. Now I teach this tactic to my students and clients as a means to help them understand the power of nonreactivity, nonresistance to what is, and the ability to hold onto personal power rather than offer it to a narcissist through a battle of words a non-narcissistic person could never win.
