All you need is the item’s ASIN. You can then become a seller for the product and piggyback off of the current listing for it. But, if you want to list a new item for sale on Amazon, you will need to get a barcode for it. This means you either need a UPC, ISBN or an EAN barcode for it. This is what each of these are: UPC: Universal Product Code. ISBN: International Standard Book Number. EAN: European Article Number. If you buy an item from a commercial store, the chances are it will have a UPC/barcode already and you can just use this. However, occasionally you’ll find items that don’t have a barcode, and in those cases, you will need to get a UPC code. **Do dropshippers have UPC/Barcodes for their items?** If you’re dropshipping and want to list an item from a dropshipper on Amazon that doesn’t already have a listing, you’ll need a barcode for that item/listing. Before buying a new UPC for it, contact the dropshipper and ask them if they have one for it. Usually they will, and you can use theirs instead of getting a new one for it. **When else would I need to buy a UPC/barcode?** 1. If you buy an item second hand in used condition (or no longer in it’s original packaging) and you want to create a new listing for it, you’ll need to get a UPC/barcode for it. 2. If you want to create a bundle (packaging different items together) that isn’t already available on Amazon, you’re going to need a UPC. 3. And if you want to sell your own item (e.g. because you have private labelled items you’ve imported from China) you will need your own UPC. **Not another business expense… is it really worth it?** Absolutely, it is worth it to buy some barcodes so that you can list items on Amazon that don’t have a UPC code already. Here is something I want you to understand: EVERY business has business expenses. If you have the vision, and the dream, of owning your own online business and becoming financially independent, then you are going to have some expenses. Another thing to keep in mind too: Every business will require some start-up money! You will need to buy some things to get started. For a dropshipping business, that includes having some money set aside for ordering items for customers once they order from you, your selling tools (like SaleHoo) and UPC codes. The good news though, is that these costs are very small compared to most start-up businesses, which makes it a great business for beginners to get started in. So don’t let the fact that you need to buy UPC codes stop you from going out there and starting your own Amazon business. It is well worth it. Want to earn $10,000/month on Amazon?
