Defence in Space: How RAF Fylingdales is helping to keep the UK safe
With 17,000 man-made objects hurtling through space at 17,500 mph, the Royal Air Force radar at RAF Fylingdales is monitoring its every move and helping to keep the UK safe. RAF Fylingdales is one of 3 radar sites in the Ballistic Missile Early Warning System (BMEWS), with another 2 sites in Alaska and Greenland. It’s the home of one of the most sophisticated radars in the world, providing early warning of a missile attack and monitoring the movements of objects in outer space. Any objects re-entering the atmosphere or a crash in space could affect British infrastructure - such as mobile phone services, television or the internet.
